The Ganeshotsav, the feast of Ganesh Chaturthi, ends 10 days after Anant Chaturdashi, also known as the day of Ganesh Visarjan. On Anant Chaturdashi, worshipers plunge Lord Ganesh's idol into the water after a gala procession through the streets.

Ganesh Puja is preferred during Madhyahna because it is believed that Lord Ganesh was born during Madhyahna Kala. Madhyahna Kala is equivalent to noon according to the Hindu division of the day.

According to Hindu timing, the time between sunrise and sunset is divided into five equal parts. These five parts are known as Pratahkala, Sangava, Madhyahna, Aparahna and Sayankal. Ganapati Sthapana and Ganapati Puja on Ganesha Chaturthi are performed during Madhyahna part of the day and, according to Vedic astrology, this period is considered the most appropriate for Ganesha Puja and the Ganesh Chaturthi 2020 date in India calendar is on 22nd August

Forbidden moon observation on Ganesha Chaturthi
We think we should not see the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi. Observation of the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi creates Mithya Dosham or Mithya Kalank (), which means false accusation of theft.

According to the puranic legends, Lord Krishna was falsely accused of stealing a precious jewel named Syamantaka. After seeing the throes of Lord Krishna, the sage Narada informed that Lord Krishna had seen the moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi's day and because of that he had been cursed with Mithya Dosha.

The sage Narada also informed Lord Krishna that God Chandra had been cursed by Lord Ganesha that anyone who would see the moon on Shukla Chaturthi during the month of Bhadrapada would be cursed with Mithya Dosha and be tainted and dishonored by society. On the advice of Sage Narada, Lord Krishna watched Ganesha Chaturthi fast to get rid of Mithya Dosha.

Depending on the start and end time of Chaturthi Tithi, moon watching may be prohibited for two consecutive days. According to the rules of, Moon should not be seen while Chaturthi Tithi wins. Moreover, the Moon raised during Chaturthi should not be seen even if Chaturthi Tithi is passed before the moon goes down
